PR WRITING

Why I am studying Public Relations

My name is Jensen and I am a senior at Georgia Southern University. When I first came to GSU I was an Exercise Science major, but realized I hated everything to do with science, so I switched to PR. I chose PR because I am good at writing and planning things. I love sports, so I would love to work in that area, or do something in planning or law. I am good with people of all types, so being able to work smoothly with someone would be easy for me. All of the courses I have taken so far have been interesting and easy to learn and understand. Hopefully with internships and more classes, I will know exactly what I want to do with PR.

There are several elements that makes something newsworthy. Timeliness, Proximity, Impact, Prominence, Human Interest and Novelty. If a story falls under one of these topics, then it is news.

I definitely believe that pop culture is newsworthy. People are obsessed with people, what they do, what they wear, who they’re dating, etc. Pop culture falls under the human interest and prominence elements of news. I know that I am interested in what my favorite celebrities are doing, and read articles about them if I see one. That is why when you’re checking out at the grocery store, there are magazines near you that are all about celebrities, whether it be true or false, because they know that no matter what people will read them. People are interested in other people, especially people who have a lot of impact like celebrities.

“Communication is Power”

When hearing this phrase, I think of how much communication has changed throughout the years. All relationships are built through communication, it is the ultimate starting point of any type of relationship. One conversation can start anything…a job, a relationship, a friendship, anything. There really is power in communication and it is essential in forming anything.

A lot of people are saying that there has been a lack of communication since technology has become so advanced, but I would have to disagree in some ways. Yes, most people our age are glued to our phones because of social media, but because of all the social media that there is now, people are interacting with people all over the world. You can go on Twitter, Facebook or Snapchat and communicate and interact with people who are thousands of miles away from you. You can read breaking news as soon as you go on social media, you can start a relationship with someone that you would never meet in person because of how far away they are. Just because there is not that face to face conversation does not mean that communicating via social media isn’t a barrier to starting some type of relationship.

A relationship between a PR practitioner and the media is a very important relationship to have. It must be built on a professional level with trust, ethics and the idea that the relationship is there to relay information to the media about your client. When sending out information, you need to make sure that the information is to the point and will benefit the journalist writing the piece, otherwise they will stop reporting on your client and even opening up your emails. The relationship between the PR practitioner and the media is very important when it comes to crisis management. If you want to get information out to the public, having that relationship with the media will highly benefit you in being able to do so by being able to get the message out in a clear way that was intended.

Nowadays, when a PR practitioner is releasing information, they not only release a traditional news release, but also on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook or online blogs. I believe that it is a good thing that as technology advances, that people, especially PR practitioners, adapt to that change. While it is still good to use traditional media communication skills, so that all information is laid out somewhere where it can be easily accessed to news outlets, it is also good that they release it on more modern outlets so that people who are more technologically advanced can easily access that information as well. As a PR practitioner, you need to be skilled in both forms of communication so that people of all ages, whether they are technologically advanced or not, can access all the information that you released and also to be successful in the PR field.
